'For three years I persuaded

라고 할 것인데

이 표현은 콩글리쉬 입니다.

그럼 어떻게 표현해야 할까요?

'persuade'는

'~에게 촉구하여 성공적으로

~을 하게 하거나 믿게 하다' 입니다.

 

그런데 상기 문장의 경우

주어가 3년 동안 부모님을 설득한 결과

성공했나요?

 

아니죠!

주어가 3년 동안 공을 들였지만

결국 부모님을 설득하지 못했습니다.

 

그래서

'persuade'를

'tried to persuade' 또는 

'urged'로 바꾸어 주여야 합니다.

 

그 이유는

어떤 사람의 행동 방침을 바꾸려고

시도(attempt)할 때는

'tried to persuade' 또는 

'urged'를 사용해야 하기 때문입니다.

상기 수정된 문장에서

‘tried to persuade’ 대신 

‘tried to convince’를

사용할 수 있을까요?

 

정답은 'No!' 입니다.

'persuade' 와 'convice'는

우리말로 모두 '설득하다' 인데

 

왜 안될까요?

 

그 이유는 'persuade' 다음에는

'to 부정사', 'that절,' 'of + 명사' 

모두가 가능한 반면,

 

'convince' 다음에는

통상 'to 부정사'가 오지 않고

 

'that절,' 'of + 명사' 가

오기 때문입니다.

정답은 'No!' 입니다.

 

그 이유는 두 가지 입니다.

 

첫 번째 이유는

 

'urge'가 동사로 사용될 때

 

'~에게 ~하도록 촉구하다'로 할 때 보통

'urge someone to do something'을

사용하기 때문입니다.

 

물론 'urge' 다음 'that'절이 가능하지만

이 경우 'that이하의 내용을 촉구하다' 뜻으로

다음과 같이 사용합니다.

 

(예문)

 

Investigators urged that safety procedures

at the site should be improved.

 

두 번째 이유는 

 

위에서 언급한 대로

 

'urge'는 어떤 사람의 행동 방침을 바꾸려고

시도할 때 사용하지만

 

어떤 사람의 신념이나 아이디어를

바꾸려고 시도할 때는

통상 사용하지 않기 때문입니다.

 

그럼 이 경우 어떤 단어를 사용할 수 있을까요?

'argue'를 사용할 수 있습니다.
