한국인이 흔히 사용하는 콩글리쉬(37) - "Baseball is my favorite kind of sport?

 

 

우리는 

'~(은)는 내가 좋아하는 종류의 것이다' 
라는 말을 영어로 표현할 때 

'~ is my favorite kind of thing' 라고 하는데 
이 표현은 콩글리쉬 입니다. 

그럼 올바른 표현은 무엇일까요? 

그냥 
'~ is my favorite thing' 
이라고 하면 됩니다.

'어떤 종류의 계절을 가장 좋아하니?' 를 

영어로 표현할 때 

'What kind of season do you like best?' 

라고 할 것 같은데
 
이 표현은 콩글리쉬 입니다.

그럼 올바른 표현은 무엇일까요?

'Which season do you like best?'

라고 해야 합니다.

'인류를 세가지 종류의 종족으로 나누다' 를 

영어로 표현할 때 

'divide mindkind into three kinds of races' 

라고 할 것 같은데

라고 하면 됩니다.

‘kind’는

‘유형(type)’, ‘종류(sort)’,

‘행동(activity)’을 의미합니다.

 

그리고

‘kind’는

유사한 관련 개체의

'집단(class)' 또는

'범주(category)' 를 가리킵니다.

 

그래서

다음과 같은 경우에 'kind'를

사용할 수 있습니다.

 

 

(예문 1)

 

A : What kind of sport is baseball?

 

B : It is a team sport, an outdoor sport,

and a non-contact sport, etc.

 

 

(예문 2)

 

A : What kind of sport do you like?

 

B : I like team sports.

 

그러나,

각 개체를 가리킬 때는

'kind'를 사용할 수 없습니다.

 

농구와 배구는

'team sports'의 

일반적인 범주에 속하는

2가지 개체(two individual items)인거죠!

 

그래서 

'baseball is my favorite kind of sport'를

'baseball is my favorite sport'로

바꾼 것입니다.

'겨울'은

유사한 또는 관련있는

개체의 분류가 아니고 

 

봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울 중

하나의 개체이므로 

'kind'를 사용할 수 없습니다.

 

그런데

'what'은 왜 'which'로

바꾸어 주어야 할까요?

부연 설명하면,
