'very'로

바꾸어야 할까요?

'so'는 '경험 또는 이해 또는

함축된 범위 또는 정도'를

나타내며

 

'그러한 정도까지(to such a degree)' 또는

'그러한 범위까지(to such an extent)'의

의미입니다.

I fell asleep on the bus.

 

☞ '너무 피곤해서(A) 버스안에서 졸았다(B)'

'(A) → (B)'가 이해됩니다(understood).

 

 

(예문 2)

 

You say you’re the richest man in this town,

but if you’re so rich(A) why is your house

so small(B) and your clothes so shabby(C)? 

 

☞ (A) rich to the degree that you claim to be

(B) small to the degree that we both understand

(C) shabby to the degree that we both can see

직접적(direct), 개인적(personal) 반응

(놀람 등)'을 나타낼 때 'so'를 사용하지만

 

'화자 자신이 직접 경험하지 않거나

반응하지 않은 경우'에는

'so'를 사용하지 않습니다. 

 

 

(예문)

 

Oh, Sweetheart! You look so beautiful today.

I love you so much!

 

☞ '화자가 상대방이 아름답고

사랑스럽다'는 것을 직접 보고 느끼고

있으므로 'so'를 사용할 수 있습니다.

 

 

그런데

"The population of New York was so small"은

어떤가요?

 

'화자의 즉각적(immediate),

직접적(direct), 개인적(personal) 반응

(놀람 등)'이 있나요?

 

정답은 'No' 입니다.

 

그러므로

위 문장에서 'so'는 사용할 수 없습니다.

The population of New York was so small.

 

그 대신 'very'를 사용해야 합니다.

The population of New York was very small.

 

☞ 'very'는

'높은 정도로(in a high degree)',

'큰 범위까지(to a great extent)',

'아주(extremely)'의 의미로

뒤에 나오는 형용사 또는

부사를 강조합니다.
