그럼 'support information'는

왜 정답이 안되는 것일까요?

 

이유는 원어민들이 그렇게

사용하지 않기 때문입니다.

 

'supporting information'을 구글에서

검색해 보면 다음과 같이 나와 있습니다.

 

Supporting information enables authors

an option to provide and archive

additional information that is critical

to the manuscript such as

the methods, figures, video files,

or animations.

 

'supporting documents'도

많이 사용하는 용어입니다.

그럼 'support'라는 명사를 이용한

'명사 + 명사' 표현은 없을까요?

 

'support group' (협력 단체)라는

용어가 있습니다.

 

이 용어를 구글에서 찾아보면

다음과 같이 나와 있습니다.

 

A support group is a gathering of people facing

common issues to share what's troubling them.

 

Through the sharing of experiences,

they're able to offer support,

encouragement, and comfort

to the other group members,

and receive the same in return.

 

많이 복잡하죠?

 

한번 더 정리해 보면,

'supporting' + 명사 일 때는 'supporting'이

'추가 또는 보충'의 의미인 반면,

 

'support' + 명사 일 때는

'support'가 '(어려움을 함께 겪은)'의 

의미입니다. 

 

예를 들면, 세월호 사건으로 

자녀를 잃어버린 부모님들이 

함께 모여 서로를 위로하는 단체는

'support group'이 될 것입니다.

b) supports 가 답이 안되는 이유 

 

'provide'의 목적어가 와야 하기 때문에 

빈칸에는 'information'을 수식할 수 있는

형용사류(형용사 또는 분사)가 필요합니다.

 

아니면, 명사가 나와도 됩니다.

그 이유는 '명사 + 명사' 표현도

가능하기 때문입니다.

 

그런데 'supports'는 정답이 될 수 없는데

그 이유는 형태적으로

동사 또는 명사로 볼 수 있는데

일단 동사는 되지 않고

명사로 보더라도 형태적으로

이상하기 때문입니다.

 

그 이유는 '명사 + 명사*' 일 경우 앞의 명사는 

특별한 경우를 제외하고 통상

단수형을 사용해야 하기 때문입니다.

 

그래서

'전쟁영화'를 'wars film'이라고 하지 않고

'war films'라고 합니다.

'supporter'를 빈칸에 넣으면,

'~ provide supporter information' 이 되어

의미적으로 이상하지만

 

형태적으로도 소유격인

supporter's 또는 supporters' 가

되어야 하기 때문입니다.
