어느 경우에
정관사(the)를 사용해야 하고
생략할 수 있는지
살펴보겠습니다.

주위에 오직 하나 존재하거나
적어도 우리가 생활하는 환경 속에서
독특한 (unique)한 것을 가리킬 때
정관사 (the)를 사용합니다.

 

(예)

 

the sun, the stars, the planets,

the world, the unions, the government,

the Japanese, the Russians, the Irish

독자나 청자가 이미 알고 있은
사항을 지칭할 때 정관사 (the)를 사용합니다.

 

 

(예문)

 

We drank the beer, the wine

and watched the video.

 

위 예문의 경우

 

상대방이

어떤 맥주, 와인, 비디오인지

이미 알고 있는 상태입니다.

(주의)

독자나 청자가 모르고 있지만
선택의 여지가 없을 때,
즉 ‘no choice’인 경우 정관사 (the)를 사용합니다. 

 

(예문 1)

 

You don’t know the Aldersons, do you?

 

화자의

사회적 환경 (social environment)상에는

 'Alderson family'는

단지 하나 (only one)입니다.

 

 

(예문 2)

 

Have you never heard of the Thirty Year’s War?

물리적 환경, 즉 우리주변의 세계,
기후 또는 우리 삶의 공통 특징 등

모든 사람들이 그 대상에 대해
친숙 (공유된 경험 또는 지식)한 것을
지칭할 때 정관사 (the)를 사용합니다.

'nature, society, space' 가
일반적 의미일 때는 무관사,
즉 관사를 사용하지 않습니다.

명사(구)가 구체적(specific)일 때 
정관사 (the) 사용합니다.

즉, which? or what? 에 대한
답변이 가능할 때 사용한다는 의미입니다.
